Coming from a family of classical musicians, the German-Swedish singer and composer Anna Luca Mohrhenn began her musical career at the piano. As a teenager, the classically trained pianist sought a more free and direct form of expression and discovered her voice and songwriting as the right outlet for her artistry. She experimented with hip hop and electronica, listened extensively to Björk and Tom Waits, and eventually fell in love with jazz.
While studying at the ArtEZ Conservatory in Arnhem, Netherlands, she was discovered by the renowned Nu-Jazz project Club des Belugas.
Over the years, Anna Luca has sung and co-written songs for nine Club des Belugas albums, including:
Swop (2008), Zoo Zizaro (2010), Club des Belugas Live (2010), Forward (2012), Fishing for Zebras (2014), Nine (2016), Strange Things Beyond the Sunny Side (2019), How to Avoid Difficult Situations (2021), and Best Of 2002–2022 (2022). Alongside this, she has released three solo albums under her own name: Listen and Wait (2012), Small Friendly Giant (2020), and Lovesongs for Movies (2022),
as well as Full Circle (2017) for Strange Attractor.
Anna Luca has collaborated with the cross-genre theatre collective Kommando Himmelfahrt, the Wuppertal Bühnen, the Wuppertal Symphony Orchestra, the Staatstheater Mannheim (Mannheim Requiem, Mannheimer Sommer), and numerous artists and ensembles such as the chamber orchestra Camerata Bern (UTOPIA - together with Bühnen Bern).
In recent years, she has increasingly focused on composing for screen, drawing from her wide-ranging musical background. Her work includes scores for major productions such as Der Bergdoktor, as well as independent films, short films, orchestral works, and avant-garde jazz pieces. She composed the score for three seasons of the critically acclaimed Servus Baby (Bayerischer Rundfunk), also serving as Musical Director from Season 2 onward.
At the heart of her artistic approach is a deep affinity for crafting emotional and intimate songs for film. Her versatility—rooted in classical piano training, jazz education, and years spent as a singer in clubs—enables her to shape and enrich cinematic material with a unique and dynamic musical language.
